I had already exceeded my usual quantity of coffee for the day. I was energised, upbeat, and getting on with the day’s tasks. One of the perks of picking up a kilo of fresh roasted beans was a courtesy coffee. The salesperson’s enthusiasm and eagerness to show his abilities was a temptation I could not resist. One macchiato later, I had a cup in hand. Soon after, I was wired up for the day and beyond.
I was surprised at how quickly the espresso touched me from the inside out. I thought I was fully engaged and moving at speed. With this extra cup, I discovered a new level. It was a combined invitation and doorway to something much, much more. I settled in and relaxed, listening to life’s whispers and painting pictures of invitations and doorway illustrations.
Connections naturally come through links. Hyperactivity and coffee are linked, at least for a time. Expressions of kindness and care introduce one to compassion, even love. Sacrifices speak of commitment and courage. I heard an old writer describing my connection with Divinity through a different lens; “The ‘curtain’ into God’s presence is his body.” (Hebrews 10.21).
Invitations have more meaning when they are accepted and used. I found myself staring at the doorknob for what could come next. I realised there were several doorways, each calling for my attention. As I prioritised and filtered, I held my values, priorities, and even intent in the balance of the moment. I had a choice then. I have a choice now. I can use my freedom to use the link at hand to share my thoughts and take a step.
As strong as something might be, what comes next is the story. Preparation, motivation, and enthusiasm are of little value until I use them in my words and deeds. Yesterday is history, something to note. Yesterday is a valuable link when it helps me learn, grow, and reach for something greater. As the day begins, I see links to a better future. I care to make a difference, inside and out.
