We had arrived at the wrong door, albeit the normal one where meetings would be held. As the receptionist gave us directions, there were clear markers and indicators of the steps required and what the destination would look like when we arrived. As I ticked each one off along the way, I reflected on the markers in my life and the story revealed. Many of them were simply pieces in a larger story. Others were milestones and signposts, each a telltale. I considered their testimony and found myself looking forward to the day ahead with a fresh perspective.
Each step is a marker. They reveal far more than one realises in the moment. It is as if one is metaphorically describing one’s values and priorities in a clear, transparent, and loud voice. Those present experience our story through the lenses of their emotions, needs, and wants. In taking the step and revealing the story, we leave breadcrumbs that are easy to follow. We may not realise where we are going, while others know it with certainty.
Life’s markers are measures of progress, forward and back. In my attempts to be kind, the outcomes of my actions and the impact of my words mark my progress towards or away from the goal. At times, there is evidence for celebrations. `Equally, I find new opportunities to learn and grow, repairing the damage as I act to bring care and kindness to the moment at hand. The upside to getting it right is the divine gifts one shares with others on the journey. At the extreme, there are examples of old to give one hope for the future. Remember, “By an act of faith, Enoch skipped death completely. ‘They looked all over and couldn’t find him because God had taken him.’ We know on the basis of reliable testimony that before he was taken ‘he pleased God.’” (Hebrews 11.5)
Yesterday’s markers leave reasons to hope. With each one, confidence grows with experience, and opportunities emerge with reflection. Today, they guide me in bringing care and kindness to my community.
