One can see far more than the person or thing ever intended to say. Today, it was a natural leaf in silhouette against the light. There were signs of good health. I could see the shape of love. I knew the plant was just being itself. With nurture, it naturally grows. Each leaf will seek the light. This is a plant with shoots going in all directions, sharing a mission while each owns its unique direction.
I caught myself smiling as life’s whispers took me in many directions. What was my calling? What was I willing to do to fulfil it? What am I trying to reveal to myself and those around me?
One’s calling is a personal response to a mission to care and make a difference. I am loved because Divinity is simply being herself. She cannot help loving unconditionally because of who she is. I have an opportunity to participate with Divinity because Divinity says I am a member of her family. I am set apart from other creatures to be a collaborative participant with her in more activities than I initially imagined. In looking up, I find myself out in the open, stretched and called to action.
Freedom is a doorway to endless possibilities if I enter. Sometimes, I need to expand my views and see more. The starting point, at least mine, is courage and resolve. I think of my historical heroes, unable to fathom their ability to endure (Shackleton), to never give up on oneself (Manasseh), and to live out a passionate life (David and many modern examples).
There is much to reach for when I am willing to take that step. I can express empathy and compassion when there is no immediate reward. I can be grounded and standing tall in my relationships, modelling what the old writer called out: “Honor marriage and guard the sacredness of sexual intimacy between wife and husband. God draws a firm line against casual and illicit sex” (Hebrews 13.4) I can strive to live as an image of Divinity.
Today is taking shape.
