The waiting room’s design and the arrangement that followed were aimed at the visitor. Chairs were arranged in pairs, recognising that those who came would bring a plus one. The Spartan layout focused on practicality and little more. Water, coffee, and tea were nearby. Prominently placed on each table was a box of tissues. The careful attention to detail was also a statement of care.
With my waiting time came an opportunity to consider the design of my day. Whispers challenged me to consider where I placed my attention. My time allocation revealed my priorities and values. I found examples where my attention was on kindness and care. There were also examples of where my ideals failed me, starting with the relationships closest to my heart. Lessons that emerged are shaping how I see the day ahead.
Life is framed through community. When I start with myself alone, my natural focus is on what is best for me in my own eyes. Alternatively, when I start with a view framed by myself in the context of others, my community, I find myself stepping into the larger story I am a part of. In looking beyond the immediate, “I turned my attention to all the outrageous violence that takes place on this planet – the tears of the victims, no one to comfort them; the iron grip of oppressors, no one to rescue the victims from them.” (Ecclesiastes 4.1) What could have been a self-centred view expands to see myself and my purpose with endless opportunities to respond.
Life is the moment I have now. Sometimes, reaching for a tissue is the best response I can give. On other occasions, it is sitting with someone, sharing a word, or taking action. In being fully present, open, and ready, I step into each moment ready to use my intellect, heart, and freedom for good. What follows will reveal my heart and soul.
Today has my attention. I hear the call. I have faith that Divinity is with me. Each moment can be a step to a better future.
