Today began with several experiences replaying in my memory, accompanied by a deep sense of thankfulness. I was an unwilling participant in several of them. The moments seem more like gifts than results that followed an action that I had taken. When I searched for a word to describe what I was feeling, I thought I could hear an echo of one writer generations ago: “At least this is my experience – what I, the Quester, have pieced together as I’ve tried to make sense of life.” (Ecclesiastes 7.27). The word that resonated was from a recent dining experience, itadaku. With apologies if it is not 100% accurate, I hear the word describing my embrace of life’s gift as “to humbly receive.”
Life is a gift, not an obligation. I am puzzled by the idea that someone owes me happiness, success, or even peace. I may have them. Often, they are gifts that I do not think I deserve. Each morning, I am reminded of the priceless gifts of relationship, acceptance, and belonging. I wake up seeing opportunities and possibilities. It is extraordinary. Even in the darkest nights, there is a feeling that there is more to life waiting for my accepting embrace. When I muster the courage to say yes, I find that gifts are waiting for me. The gifts include hope, courage, and the awareness that I can care, I can bring kindness, and, in short, I can make a difference.
Life is uniquely laid out for every individual. No two stories are the same. Many of the chapters pivot on the openness of those involved to embrace and respond to the opportunities. What unfolds leaves telltales that point to one’s heart and soul. It is our words, our steps, and ultimately our voice that will share our story with those around us. As I celebrate the journeys, yours and mine, I discover that there are opportunities to support each other. Communities are strong, resilient, and powerful when harmony unites them. When harmony is grounded in compassion, empathy, and unconditional acceptance, miracles will follow.
