Recent events have led to the loss of life in multiple venues in multiple cities. For some, it is just another tragedy in the uncountable tragedies that have plagued the city and country for decades. For others, it is a brutal reminder that there is no immunity because anyone and everyone is vulnerable. Whatever words are said, no matter how many candles are lit, the harsh reality is that hundreds of lives have been lost. Families remain, torn and scarred from evil’s touch. Relations that were a vibrant part of many lives are no more. It seems as if the life’s center is being slowly torn by uncontrollable forces with a life purpose to destroy.
As the news comes in that friends and friends of friends are safe, I find myself considering what will abide and endure. In sadness, fear, and doubts, I give witness to the following.
Caring communities will endure. In tragedy and pain, the best of humanity stands tall. Voluntarily giving our hearts, means, and souls, individuals do what they can and more. Because of this, no matter how many fall or fail, I am confident our “family tree is here for good, his [our] sovereignty as sure as the sun.” (Psalm 89.36)
Compassion will always be something we reach for and hold close to our hearts. Regardless of one’s belief system or even in the lack of one, there is something universally compelling with compassion – the godlike emotion and principles that brings out the best in humanity’s ability to be empathetic, kind, and benevolent. In its greatest moment, compassion transcends the need for justice and accountability.
Beauty and wonder will continue to give birth to hope. I watched someone playing a piano while others watched. The unsung lyrics taken the audience to a place of healing, peace, and hope. We imagined and in letting the imagination rest in our hearts found ourselves transformed.
I hope the recent tragedies touch my life long after the news updates fade. I hope they are invitations that abide and remain calls of compassion, community, and hope.
