I work a few blocks from the Trump Tower. I have on occasion had the opportunity to walk by, see, and observe Mr. Trump. Candidly, he is not an accessible individual. I never felt like I was able to go up to him, introduce myself, and have a conversation.
New York is full of interesting individuals. Movie stars, great leaders, notable executives, artists, and designers. Each, often in their own right, earned the respect of their peers and the admiration of the public. Some are accessible, willingly talking to those who care to introduce themselves. They are willing to pose for pictures. They are willing to spend time with those they just met. It seems, more and more, that these are exceptional individuals. The stereotyped response is one of arrogance, aloofness, and separation.
I find the attitude is not limited to those in positions of excellence and power. Closed-door attitudes are more about the mind, metaphorical if I could be so bold, than physical panels. Last night, on an empty car, almost every Individual on the subway had retreated into a world of their imagination. A young, struggling, hard hat had a different attitude. His eyes were open, ready to engage. His body language spoke of hard work, long hours, and commitment, yet it seemed ready to give more if needed. I do not know if he wanted conversation, yet he was open to the idea.
Over dinner last night, I realized that God is behind closed doors for many. We raise barriers, constructing elaborate facades within our souls and minds. Today I know I can let the walls exist or respond to the calling that exists for each. The Spirit is working, reaching out to you and me. For each, God words are the same; “I, yes I, have spoken. I've called him. I've brought him here. He'll be successful.” (Isaiah 48.15) What happens next will speak volumes, to ourselves and to the world around us. Yesterday’s doors do not need to be today’s reality. We have part of God’s family. The door is open.
