I like being liked. I enjoy being one of the gang, just hanging with friends. It feels good to simply float with whatever is happening, with no responsibilities pulling or tugging. For many, this is the essence of what it means to live. It is the hope buried within many of our dreams. Yet I do not find God calling us to this kind of life, at least in the present. We are called to support. We are called to accountability. We are called to walk with hope. It is the combination of support, accountability, and hope that brings life into focus.
Given the needs of those around us it is easy to focus on support. It is also good to be a messenger of hope! The combination is extremely powerful, yet it lack’s Truth’s ability to change us from the inside out. Far too often we ignore the very obstacles that prevent Hope from being fully present. Is seems easier to respond to one’s cry for help, being present in a time of need. As critical as the two elements are, there is a need to see life exactly as it is.
Unless one sees an obstacle, it is impossible to walk around it or to free one’s self from it.
Unless one calls evil by its rightful name, one perpetuates the myth that evil is not Evil.
Unless one confronts barriers to compassion, mercy, and truth, one will find that one is behind the very fence that one was trying to overcome.
Accountability never stands alone. It is good to say it like it is, “you, children of a witch, come here! Sons of a slut, daughters of a whore. What business do you have taunting, sneering, and sticking out your tongue? Do you have any idea what wretches you've turned out to be? A race of rebels, a generation of liars.” (Isaiah 57.3, 4) Yet it only when coupled with Support and Hope that anything changes.
We live in a fragmented, disjointed world. If we want change, we will require the complete package.
