In a strange way today, one who liberally took my ideas as his own often without due credit, acknowledged a gift freely shared. In my hierarchy of values, the freely shared gift was the most important in my life. It is a Spirit gift a Spirit, received with the understanding that it would make me a better person. It has. The outcome left me in debt. The only way I know how to repay this debt is to give it to others as it was given to me; freely, unreservedly, and without a need to acknowledge, recognize, or reward. Today felt like a small piece of my debt was repaid. I also realized there is so much left for me to do.
There is little point in responding negatively for any length of time when one’s ideas are taken. In the greater story, it is never about one’s rewards or recognition. It is always about what one did with and in the opportunities that emerged in the journey. One’s efforts to improve the world around her/him is the second most important thing we can do. The most important assignment lies in nurturing and growing one’s heart, soul, and mind.
Along the way, others will give and some will take. You will be rewarded and ignored. You will be recognized and disavowed. What happens externally is, in the greater story of our lives, not our primary concern. Yes, we can defend ourselves. However, this defense is not our primary calling. We are called to engage passionately and completely in living with the aspiration and intent of making this world a better place. We are called to do good. We are invited to make a difference. We are invited to be motivators and catalyst for love.
I find myself remembering that I am never alone. There is a Spirit that is always with us. His credits are endless. From one perspective, “He made Ocean – he owns it! His hands sculpted Earth!” (Psalm 95.5) From another, She introduced me to love and mercy by embracing me with both.
