Over the past few months, I have participated in a recurring me where an idea has emerged and along the way been nurtured and refined. Each time we meet, the agenda is simple. Focus, refine, and develop the idea to the next stage. Review progress, address obstacles, and plan the next steps.
As a recent meeting reminded me, things do not always go as planned. Events the occurred drove me to find and reread the email on the meeting. The agenda was clear. There was no room for confusion. The words were simple, direct, and combined in ways made the meaning clear. Coming into the meeting, I understood what I was supposed to understand.
In the bigger scheme of life, I am ok with diversions. Although there were items that we still need to discuss and explore, I did have the opportunity to meet several new individuals. Each was interesting in a unique way. It is likely our paths will cross again, so it was useful.
The challenge that has sparked reflection is the uncertainty with agendas. Will we always stick to the plan? Is a plan a commitment and if so, how firm is it? Does everyone, God included, get a bye once in awhile. Was the recent change in plans normal?
As I read about the past, is appears that my questions have been around for ages. Even God is not beyond being questioned. “God is out to help Zion, rebuilding the wrecked towns of Judah. Guess who will live there – the proud owners of the land?” (Psalm 69.35)
I find myself holding onto three reminders as I look to the future.
Life is defined by more than one event. Exceptions can and do occur. Strive to see moments though the eyes of others.
If one has doubts, look beyond the moment and listen to the bigger story. See the trends, examine the characters, and explore the connections between words, actions, and relationships.
Never let others dictate the future. The freedom within us contains the accountability of choice.
Life never stops. Carpe diem.
