The Madonna depicted sandstone artwork was displayed in an unusual setting. There was no other art like it within sight. It was on a wall leading outside, without any indication this smooth stone wall would be decorated with anything other than an information sign. As I stopped and looked, I could imagine her gaze and words as she looked up. “I am at work so that the plants can do their part. Everyone has a role to play. Rest comes when it is time.”
The days were long, the work endless. There were challenges and barriers. There was no time to rest. I silently stood before the woman watering. I could feel her confidence and awareness of hope’s reality. She has doubts that the plants will grow, blossom, and provide. As the day ends and the light grows soft, we know rest is at hand.
I listened reflectively to the lessons that are framing the day ahead.
My calling means there will be times when I work as others rest. This is not about fairness. It is responding to my opportunities when they arise. I cannot predict when I will be called. Life reminds me that the seeds were not in a position of growth until she completed her work. There is a connection between the two that can never be broken. In harmony with others, the sun and more, growth and a new generation will follow.
Success comes with collaboration. Plans and flowers never go it alone. The elements, from insects pollinating to birds and water in all its forms, come together with the sun and moon to give us the miracle of a new generation. We enjoy the results. I see it in the beauty and shade of trees and palms. I taste the fruits that are produced without giving back. With their gifts come a growing awareness of commitment, perseverance, and the willingness to fulfil a promise.
Today will be hard work. I trust “God himself is at rest. And at the end of the journey, we’ll surely rest with God.” (Hebrews 4.10)
