In a recent meeting with several in the room and others connected virtually, our collaborative discussion on what was needed was making good progress. There was an emerging consensus on the outcomes. As we talked through the supporting tech required, I was increasingly concerned on the timing of what was needed. Did my team have the capacity to deliver the required when it was needed?
With one question, everything pivoted.
Paraphrasing the question asked – “What is the purpose of an interim deliverable?”
My mind brought two distinct thoughts front and center.
First, the ask of the engineering team just shrunk, significantly!
Second, it is far too easy to forget how differently individuals see any situation.
I remember the first time I realized Divinity saw things differently than me. Like our recent conversation, my first reaction was surprise. When I stop to consider the larger story, I have no idea why I was surprised, but I was. The obvious truth is the reality that you and I see things differently. Why, especially given the difference between us, would things be any different with Divinity?
It is easy to forget, and even when reminded, recognizing the difference should be a trigger for further action. In the recent conversation, with an affirmation from several, myself included, that this was a great question, a proposal which solved multiple challenges was tabled. I realized the suggestion was the second part of the lesson.
If Divine thinking is different than mine, is listening to understand the next step?
As the reflection on our meeting settles in my mind, I find an echo of the lesson in the psalmist’s observation; “It’s a fact: darkness isn’t dark to you; night and day, darkness and light, they’re all the same to you.” (Psalm 139.12)
Divinity view is radically different than yours and mine. I am reminded how Her thinking plays out uniquely in each life. Divinity tailors the principles of compassion, care, and kindness to each in a way s/he needs. My goal today is to seek out and hear Divinity’s voice with renewed awareness.
