In life's busyness, it is easy to forget the obvious. Often we go so long without seeing the ordinary of life that we forget the basics. Did you see the colors of today's dawn? Did you notice the various textures of your last meal? Did you understand and appreciate the most recent gift of love, compassion, or acceptance in your life?
I shared a moment with an old friend yesterday. I found myself longing for his perspective and words of wisdom. I doubt he fully understand how influential he was and is. There is a wonder that started with our first virtual meeting. I shared a hidden smile then as I do now. I know God continues to touch my soul through this child of Divinity.
I am also aware of the incessant tugs of this world. It seems to haunt us all. One does not escape with success. One does not avoid by hiding with friends. In the darkness of the night, there is an unending reality begging us to confront our souls. We may avoid it but the dark struggle will go on. We may try to hide yet we are always in the presence of the Spirit. Our weaknesses remain, no matter how much armor insulates us from the world around us.
There is a old Divine promise that shapes my reaction to the world at hand. “The whole earth is wrapped in darkness, all people sunk in deep darkness, but God rises on you, his sunrise glory breaks over you.” (Isaiah 60.2) It is in this promise that I find myself standing. Life pours out; God is here. Life tears at our soul's fabric; the Spirit lives within. Life refreshes those deserving and not; Divinity calls us to higher ground.
I look out into a tropical monsoon storm and I find myself buried in peaceful tears. I know God is with me, yet I long to feel Divinity's embrace. I hear the Spirit calling, and I urge my soul to respond. We are children of God. May this awareness receive life today.
