When I think of hope filled moments, some of the best are linked to moments when meek, quiet, and unassuming individuals stood up and were counted. I often find myself wondering about the “why” behind the moment. There is no obvious answer. There were other situations where the truth had gone on holiday and nobody stood up to for its defense. There were other events where someone's reputation was being torn apart for simply amusement. Even moments of exploitation and abuse have gone unchecked. Yet, in a singular moment, when those least expected stood up and are counted, I find myself confronted by Hope. On every occasion, I find myself surprised by the timing and force of the experience. I also find myself wondering why they are so few and infrequent.
Even as I begin to form my criticism, I find myself looking in the mirror. I do not always stand up for those that cannot defend themselves. I often turn away without responding to acts of exploitation and greed. It is far too easy to ignore the blight of those less fortunate, responding involves time and risk.
Even as I begin to thrash my soul for yet more squandered opportunities, I find myself remember an old story. It was when “one of the council members stood up, a Pharisee by the name of Gamaliel, a teacher of God's Law who was honored by everyone.” (Acts 5.34) He had failed on many occasion, but not this one. The question I face is not about yesterday, it is in the moment at hand.
The process need not stop there. Gamaliel, who was oblivious in the bigger scheme of history, was respected in his community. If I want to make a difference, I can stand up for right in the ordinary events of life. Without controversy or pressure, I can nurture the courage required when backbone is needed.
Gamaliel was able to seize a moment in time because he was engaged in the process of living. You and I can do the same by living life to fullest.
