The streetside table was dusty and noisy. When the dolmas arrived, the simplicity of the grape leaves filled with lemony rice and herbs, combined with a touch of fresh pomegranate seeds, took me to a silent reflection. When I thought of the collaboration between the chef and the ingredients, the story was intense, profound, and amazing. I thought I was seeing and experiencing an echo of the old observation: “Take a good look at God’s work. Who could simplify and reduce Creation’s curves and angles to a plain straight line?” (Ecclesiastes 7.13)
So much was going on in each bite. As I enjoyed the experience and considered Life’s whispers, I found myself thinking of the day ahead.
Life is never as complex as one thinks. In the moment, choices come down to simple questions. Is it about me or us? Do I take the decisions all on my own, or do I trust Divinity’s story? What will I do with what I know? The choices may be many. The options can be varied. In each moment, there is a decision to make, an experience to be remembered, and lessons to be considered for the moment that is coming next. It is never about being perfect, whatever that might mean. It is about caring, acting, and learning in every step I take.
Rewards come in many forms. On this evening, it was more than the wonderful experience I discovered with each bite. It was the service delivered with a generous smile and a genuine welcome. If this was not enough, the company and conversation that went with it were funny, engaging, and filled with hope. I enjoyed a sunset dinner filled with unexpected rewards and a gift of optimism that is being unwrapped as I start a new day.
Destinations and milestones are not always planned. As important as planning is, moving with life’s currents, seizing the opportunities that come along, and caring to make a difference is the priority. Today will be filled with unknowns and uncertainties. The cliché plays out, one bite at a time.
