At times one is asked to do something with whatever one has. A meal for surprise guests starts with whatever is in the kitchen. A project can be short of resources however one is asked to do one’s best to deliver whatever one can. It is easy to imagine being asked to do the impossible without the tools. It feels like it happens repeatedly.
As we mused about life, I found myself in the midst of a story that I want to hear in more detail. The bits and pieces of his life had familiar elements in it but it came with a very different story line. Although there is more of the story to come, the first phase left me with helpful reminders.
In every story line there is a character that gives all of her/himself. It is usually one of the lead characters. Committed, passionate, and engaged, s/he puts everything into the venture. When the story line shifts, often through things unforeseen or anticipated, this character is left with an empty space within. For those that have not been through it, it is good to remember the Psalmist’s words as a starting point; “I’m like a buzzard in the desert, a crow perched on the rubble.” (Psalm 102.6)
In many stories, there are events that loop back on prior events. The forms a chain that gives support to the concept of karma. Individuals and communities often reap what they sow. We often think of it as a negative. This story reminded me of the experiences that come with hope, a love of living, and energy that was born from thankfulness.
When one chapter ends in the story, Uncertainty and Doubt try to take the stage. Although it is natural, there is no need to honor these mischievous characters. Old friends are waiting in the wings as well, waiting to be invited to certain stage; Faith, Reflection, and Courage.
I am looking forward to the second act. Having friends on the journey always enriches the experience, lightens the load, and makes it safer.
