It is easy to assume that the good things in life come from our handiwork. After all, we play a critical role in determining our friends. The gifts of relationship, worldly success, and blessings fall equally on those deserving and those who do not. Ironically, the basic requirements of what it takes to survive often go to those that are the worst stewards. It is as if life has it everything backwards. While it seems that way, there are two things that everyone starts with but few decide to keep.
The first blessing each has from birth is the Divine gift of freedom. It may take us a few years to realize that it is ours. As we realize that we have this within us, we often follow our discover by an tended time of squandering the gift. It is only with the benefit of time, miles, and the openness to appreciate what we have, that we come realize how precious it is. This often occurs as we give it away without thought to addictions, pursuits, and cravings.
The second blessing is something that will only come in the fullness of time. God will, in right moment, examine your life and mine. I find God repeating a recurring promise; live a life of faith in love, compassion, mercy, acceptance, and community and you will be recreated into a world of unlimited unending experiences of the same. It is a wonderful promise, especially given the hells the least deserving often find themselves in.
When I hear God's voice reminding me to “look at how differently I've treated you, Jacob, from Esau: I loved Jacob and hated Esau. I reduced pretentious Esau to a molehill, turned his whole country into a ghost town.” (Malachi 1.3b) I know God is talking about the sense of mission, purpose, and promise that we are called into.
Today is a day for realizing this blessing. It starts with our waking to a world of opportunity. It finds life when we exercise the freedom to choose. We can realize heaven with our steps.
