Knowing one gets to choose is a powerful gift. Kids love it, even as they choose things unlikely to be any parent’s first choice! As an adult, I still love it because it reminds me that I oversee my life. I have freedom. I choose. The right, even with obligations, is mine!
A friend often reminds me that each morning in his life arrives with a fresh choice to make. Will friends and relationships of yesterday, be his choice today? Will he honor past commitments with a new one? What will his choice be?
As much as this may create uncertainty for others, I have come to appreciate the gift which it represents to others. Those I love, have an opportunity to hear, feel, and sense that I have chosen to love them on this day. Although it is a decision which was made yesterday, the day before that, and on many additional days, it is a decision of the present. It was made fresh this morning. It is a commitment of the here and now. Even as it continues, it has a freshness to it which does not age.
As I think of individuals who have received this gift from me, I realize am also a recipient. Others have given it to me. Some came with my knowledge, many without. In each case, I can think of reasons which say I do not deserve their gift. Especially when they know my weaknesses, the gift comes with a sense of awe and the power of healing and renewal. Their freedom of choice is a blessing.
Today starts with unmerited blessings. As tough as the day is going to be, it is easier because of the gifts from others. The clarity of an old two-fold prayer comes into focus; “Pray for Jerusalem’s peace! Prosperity to all you Jerusalem-lovers!” (Psalm 122.6). In my prayer for peace and hope, I can bless all who share this prayer. In our dialogue, it is our hopes which binds us, not our fears. May you receive this blessing with an open heart.
