This train was taking me to a good destination. It was coming. It would not be long. As it slowed to a stop, the doors began to open, and I knew with certainty that I had a simple choice – would I board this train, or would I let it pass? Seconds would reveal the story and forever be etched in my history.
I remember hearing Oscar Peterson playing “Night Train” in my mind. It sounded so real! Time slowed as Peterson’s trio transported me to a dark, intimate jazz stage. I could feel the rhythms of the music and the train picking up speed. I had a moment to act. I knew if I hesitated, both would be lost. I stepped onto the train, and the music continued to play, at least for me.
Getting on board is an invitation to something bigger than one imagines. I often think I determined my destinations, only to realise that my greatest experiences were ones that were beyond anything in my dreams. When I let go and trust the trusted, I face an opening door. The conductor’s words echo across time. “I’m sure that won’t happen to you, friends. I have better things in mind for you – salvation things!” (Hebrews 6.9)
Opportunities are windows that are influenced by many. Life reminds me that there are far more opportunities in my life than I realised within the moment. It is as if I can only see them clearly in hindsight. The determining factor is my awareness. Being open and alert is a starting point. Letting life slow so that I am fully and completely in the moment gifts me with the ability to embrace.
Getting on board is never a solo adventure. Getting on the train is a decision to be part of a community and a greater story. I knew the destination being offered. What followed was a mix of action, acceptance, and even rest. Everything was possible with my choice to get on board. I hear the kindness and care train arriving. Today’s train is my opportunity
