On the window shelf in the apartment sits a Buddha. In the Buddha’s best tradition, the image reminds me of the importance breathing plays in each moment of my life. I realise that it may seem odd to remind someone to breathe. For me, the reminder is far more than an automatic act. I see breathing as an invitation tailored for the moment. There are different calls. To reset my heart and mind, I need a cleansing breath. When I begin to lose focus, I look to slow my breathing. When it is a special moment, I breathe to focus and reflect. In silence, Buddha takes me to a place of choice.
As the dawn reveals a new day, I hear a calling to silence and quiet breaths. I realise that this is not the destination. Each breath is a threshold I will cross as I embrace what Divinity has already prepared for me today. In taking these steps, there are lesson reminders for the unfolding journey.
Each step in my life is an opportunity to grow. In taking them, I find myself thankful for everything that has brought me to where I am. Through pain and celebrations, brilliant choices and failures, life has continued to give me opportunities to take the lessons and use them for good. What I see now, I did not see or imagine earlier. I realise my views of Divinity continue to change with my evolution; “If that animal blood and the other rituals of purification were effective in cleaning up certain matters of our religion and behavior, think how much more the blood of Christ cleans up our whole lives, inside and out.” (Hebrews 9.13, 14)
Every individual has a calling. I see the callings in our lives as unique, tailored, and personal. At times, I catch a glimpse of the calling others hear. Each time I do, I celebrate Divinity’s openness in a setting where everyone can win. We are invited to fulfil our roles in strengthening a community of compassion, kindness, and care.
It is time to breathe.
