In our age of political correctness, it is refreshing to hear someone describe something as it is. No embellishments, little exaggerations, no particular commentary; just a statement of fact. At times it seems s if there is no one to stand up and state what we all know to be true.
The party was in full swing. It was filled with great food, fun conversations, and friends old and new. As the focus of attention drifted and meandered, I was surprised to find certain subjects that are traditionally off limits. Politics, religion, and even local drivers were all fodder for viewpoints, disagreements, and candid observations. I never imagined we would cover the range of topics that we did. The big surprise was that we explored many with a candor that was refreshing, even when I disagreed! At times, disagreements were explored. On another subject, several described the situation was it is.
In thinking about what made the evening so much fun, I realize that there was a combination that one can work to repeat.
As strongly as some views were, there was an openness to hear from the other. The consistent willingness to hear created a window for candid expression.
Critical comments stayed on point, never becoming personal. Even in the heat of expressing alternative viewpoints, everyone laughed and joked with the other. The tone of respectful opened the door for more.
Divergence and diversity were celebrated. It was as if everyone was looking to be different! The wonder of how we could get along was founded with openness and respect, and it grew with the encouragement of no coming to a consensus on what was best or right.
There is a time to candor, when one can “say to the smart alecks, ‘that’s enough,’ to the bullies, ‘not so fast.’” (Psalm 75.4) Having had the experience of one great evening with candor being at the center, I am already looking forward to another. I can only hope to discover a community that is like this 24×7. Someday…for sure when we are in a better place.
