I have always thought Singapore was and is hot. More than thought, I believed with every fiber of my being. I knew and accepted this fact. I still believe Singapore is warm and humid. Yet relative to the noonday sun in the Cambodian wet season, Singapore is incredibly and wonderfully temperate!
Carli and I mused over the weather notes left on our pillows at the hotel just outside of Angkor Wat. We had read the travel book warning of what the day could be like. We thought we knew and were prepared. We were so wrong! In hindsight, we had no idea. The good news is that we went out with one liter of water each, thinking it would help us get to a mid-afternoon lunch. Our ignorance almost got us in trouble. Lucky for us, we listening to our bodies and were blessed with opportunities to repeatedly purchase bottled water along the way.
The contrast was there if one took the time to observe. Candidly, God’s warning then and now was often ignored. Even the directive was ignored. “Therefore listen, please, you with your splitting headaches, you who are nursing the hangovers that didn't come from drinking wine.” (Isaiah 51.21) People were paying the price.
It was hot, seriously overwhelming, consuming, and potentially life sapping. Yet in the midst of it all, we listening and followed the advice. Five liters each later, dripping sweat from every article of clothing, and the sense of how far our casual non-rushed walking had taken us, we called it a day. As exhausting as everything was, we felt good! We took a short break at the hotel and headed out again to see more sights!
I wonder if I realize how God is willing to respond in quenching my spiritual thirst. It comes from deep within. There are spiritual waters that will keep me healthy, but am I drinking long and deep? Often I catch myself not sweating. This should be a dire warning, if I want to live. I wanted to live then. I do now.
