There is a link between choices, decisions, and actions and outcomes. I know this seems obvious when it is words on paper. I also know what happens when one is caught in the reality of the day. The pace of and chaos of the good days, along with the turmoil and drama of the bad ones, easily forces us out of the rhythms that keep us balanced and aligned. It is as if everything in life is conspiring against our souls.
In the midst of all this there are those who expect Divinity to just “solve” everything. It is as if we are not responsible for the very freedom which we demand, treasure, and guard. Expressed another way, our freedom to express hate, anger, and judgment should not have negative consequences! Life doesn’t work this way. There is a link between our choices and what subsequently happens!
I wonder what I expect government to do in my life. Fix everything? Solve the problems of race and bigotry? Prevent every health problem? Police the world? As I examine my choices in the midst of an election campaign I find myself coming back to the truth, principles, and personal choice. How much am I willing to be accountable for?
When I speak of principles I hold close to my heart a simple question rests in the choices of others. If my values are “truth” shouldn’t others willingly accept or perhaps be forced to accept them as their own? The simple and direct answer is no! The answer is the same as it was centuries ago when Jesus was asked why others didn’t know principles he was talking about.
“‘Because a loveless world,’ said Jesus, ‘is a sightless world. If anyone loves me, he will carefully keep my word and my Father will love him–we'll move right into the neighborhood!’” (John 14.23)
Today I can keep the flame alive; I can be an example of love, grace, and acceptance in action. It may not be easy, others will wonder. You and I can be the difference.
