“My theme song is God’s love and justice, and I’m singing it right to you God.” Psalm 101.1
Taking time out to reflect with friends is always a good thing. Planning to do it on a regular basis takes work, however it cements your own beliefs and memories into place. Cherry, Carli, Whitney, and I have a regular routine of taking time out to reflect on what we see and value. Additionally we are developing a regular routine of doing things together that are just “fun”. When we combine the two activities, it is cause for celebration!
Here is your two-part assignment.
First, take a Psalm, any Psalm, and read it out-loud to a friend. Have your friend do the same for you. If you only have one Bible then it can become two steps. Step 1 is that one should read it. After pausing, each should echo it back in their life words and examples. It is important that each should hear the same Psalm from at least one other voice. Next, take time alone to write or draw the scene just read to you. The picture does not need to be full of details, just capture what you see in your mind. When complete, come together and share what you have. We shared pictures through drawings and imagines on the mind described by one as others closed their eyes.
Second, go outside with a friend and just “cruise.” For us, cruising was along the Thames River on bicycles. It could be anywhere and in any mode of movement. Walking, skating, or sitting on a strategic vista will work as well.
Our experience is that this two-part exercise lit up the day in ways we could not imagine. God spoke in direct ways, we enjoyed God’s beauty and creation around us, we experienced things together, and we gave something back.
Every day is a fresh opportunity to celebrate. Taking one day a week as a special day of reflection and togetherness takes things up a notch. Life is too important not to party with God!
