Singapore turned 49 recently. It is interesting to experience a country getting collectively sentimental, in the best kind of ways. History is replayed, key memories captured on grainy fill, through pictures long forgotten, and recounted in personal stories that always seem to tell more than they intend. It is amazing to look back and see how far a relatively small number of individuals have taken a community onto the world stage. Dreams may have been had then, however I doubt that there were many confident believers. Ideals were shared, yet differences were present even then.
As I watch from an outsider perspective, remembering the days I shared with the country across the years. From the age of three when I first arrived for my freshman year in high school through now, it has been an interesting journey. The guiding leadership is still present, faith renewed by his appearance on the stage. It is hard to imagine how he looks at the reality of his dreams.
The celebration was more than a nostalgic look back. It was also a celebration of people, community, and commitment. Armed forces, singers and dancers from all walks of life participated with smiles that never seemed to end. The fireworks that erupted over the Marina and other parts of the city repainted the night sky in bright colors.
As darkness returned I found myself appreciating the journey and the experience. In the decades since I first lived in Singapore I have grown and experienced life in so many different ways. In the joy and in the sadness, there is a constant. For what Divinity has and is doing I can only say this; “Earth, display your exuberance! You mark us with blessing, O God, our God.” (Psalm 67.6) You are wonderful!
In the quietness of a morning that followed, I find myself looking into the future. The values and principles of the dream remain as true now as they were then. Today is a time for renewed commitment and new action. While little is obvious, guidance remains. Divinity was and is here.
