The area in front of the apartment caters to children, a short walk, and anyone looking to enjoy fresh air. The nighttime view reveals a reference line that appears to be a whimsical addition by the architect. In my reflection on a spring evening, I found myself listening to the painted chalk line guiding words.
Reference points are useful, presuming I use them. Life reminds me that there are multiple challenges with the guidelines. The first is simple; “It’s crucial that we keep a firm grip on what we’ve heard so that we don’t drift off.” (Hebrews 2.1) Unless I keep my bearing, follow the lines on the expressway, and focus on the goal, I will wander. This is true at sea, on the roads, and in every decision I will face today.
Reference points are not useful until they are embraced. I see stakes in the ground and nothing in between. Metaphorically, if I tie a chalk-coated string between the two stakes, I could snap it and leave a reference line as my reference guide. The connection between the reference points in my life lies within my heart and mind. When I reveal these through my actions, I show the usefulness of the reference points. Imagine kindness revealed. Picture caring in action. Love is transformed from a whimsical idea to a life-changing force that restores the hearts of everyone touched.
References points can be good and bad. Choosing with care and reflection is always a good idea. I have come to appreciate the responsibility and accountability that rests on every individual in this matter. I have no idea what is best for you. I can support you in the process, giving you the same freedom I need in choosing what is best for my life. I have made mistakes with my choices. Today is an opportunity to reaffirm and realign. I can lay out a chalk line for my next few steps. Aiming for the best and learning from whatever follows.
Chalk lines guide my steps. With a snap, I aim for the best.
