If I could tell of story of the possible, I would tell of the unknown that emerges when someone cares enough to plant a seed. Something magical and unpredictable seems to follow. Yes, one knows directionally that can occur. If the seed germinates, a plant, blossom, and eventual fruit can emerge. There are layers of ifs. There is also the known of what will happen. Fruits are similar but always slightly different from each other.
The story could begin with the words of an author from a bygone era; “You could never guess what a tomato would look like by looking at a tomato seed. What we plant in the soil and what grows out of it don’t look anything alike.” (1 Corinthians 15.37) I can imagine enjoying a salad with fresh tomatoes as I heard the words. I could not help but appreciate the contrast and the wonder that rests between the seeds and everything that follows.
We live in a word of possibilities. Yesterday’s pain and limitations do not need to dictate today or tomorrow. Whatever was is something I can learn from in order to make something of today. The now is here, waiting for you and I to embrace and choose. We have the freedom within us to write our stories.
Change is rarely easy. I find it natural to want what I know has already worked. It is good to know that I can follow steps that kept me safe. Doing something different, something that has not been done, has no history I can take comfort in, is anything but natural. And yet you and I are called to do something with what we have. Each moment is wonderfully unique. We have the freedom. We have the Spirit to nurture our thoughts and abilities. What we need is within us.
The set-up is present in the day and moment at hand. Do we want more? Are we willing to reach for it? I know I hope I will allow Hope to give me the courage I need to make this real.
