It is easy to think that one’s character is managed by how I describe myself to others. The message seems to be a simple one. “Listen carefully and my character will be revealed”. Life periodically reminds me that words are never enough. My actions, presence, and relationships with others reveal my character in ways I never imagined. As I shared lunch with two close friends, their characters were on full display. Lunch was far more than just food. My head and heart were nourished as much as my body. My soul was filled with hope and love. When we finally finished, I rose from the table energised and healed.
Experiencing acceptance, as you are, where you are, without conditions or commentary is a game changer. Good relationship pieces follow – respect, care, and kindness. It begins with acceptance and a sense of being part of a special relationship. It grows stronger with attention and time. Different points of view are gateways to wonderful conversations. Fears and doubts are shared with confidence in how they are going to be heard. One comes in tired and goes away refreshed.
Legacies, culture, and family are opportunities for sharing. There are no barriers created by our differences. In great characters I experienced the truth of Paul’s notes; “That means that Israelite identity was never racially determined by sexual transmission, but it was God-determined by promise.” (Romans 9.8)
When one finds a character filled with goodness, one realises that any words the individual might share automatically faded into the background. In their actions, decisions, and voices, I found life’s greatest gift playing out in my heart, mind, and soul. It was the gift of unconditional friendship. It was the knowledge that the other would always walk with you. It was the certainty of being cared for when others had walked away.
I am better because of the experience of being with others. Today, I have an opportunity to gift others with my version. It is more than an opportunity. It is a calling with purpose. I am excited about what can follow.
