Dinner reminded me how good it can be when one goes to dinner with high experience expectations. You are certain the dinner is going to be fantastic! In this case, my mouth was watering, my stomach growling, and everything was on edge anticipating the experience I was confident would come!
In this case, it did not disappoint. The food was fantastic, the banter with the chef as fun as always, and everything played out in a way that left me longing to come back for another experience. As we left my words were echoed a generation from a long time ago; “Blessed be God, Israel’s God! Bless now, bless always! Oh! Let everyone say Amen! Hallelujah!” (Psalm 106.48)
In the midst of life’s chaos, I really enjoy getting away and enjoying an experience that I am able to plan, anticipate, and celebrate. When it exceeds high expectations, it is even better! It is a great reminder that good things are often hiding in plain sight.
I know not ever dinner will turn out that way. There are a variety of reasons – from misplaced expectations to new staff and the occasion its-a-bad-day – sometimes things do not work out as planned. I rarely strike a place off my list for one bad experience. When it becomes a pattern, then it is time to reconsider.
I was also reminded how much fun it was to share. The friend with me had been to the restaurant years ago. In the interim, he has travelled, lost touch, and in the end the location dropped off his go-to list. As he walked in, his eyes lit up and he recounted good times and great food.
Chefs play a critical role in the dinner experience. I also know that sous chefs, waiters, and other staff all have a part in the experience that one takes away from the meal. It is the combination of great ingredients, technically sound processes, and an attitude of joy and service that makes the time memorable.
I came in need and left celebrating. I look forward to repeats.
