Climbing Ladders

It seems that no matter what I say or do, I will compete to win in any given situation, decision, or action. There are exceptions, but they are rare. I find that I enjoy the journey with someone, striving to be the best we can be, to achieve what everyone else thought would be impossible!

Work is an obvious environment in which competition brings out the best and worst in all of us. We strive to achieve or delivery more in our jobs than our bosses and peers expect. When opportunities come, we carry a pain when we think our managers are not considering us for the more senior position. Everyone wants someone to recognize his contributions as a strong performer. Climbing the next step, getting a bit more money, gaining wider responsibilities, are all signals that we are worth something to somebody!

I keep trying to climb a ladder to reach God. God is so far out there I know that my efforts are required in order to bridge the gap! I see the distance and realize that I must help. There is no choice, right? I am absolutely and completely wrong!

In relationships with people I often believe the world’s mantra that only a few can and will make it to the top. This belief implies that we can leverage each other’s strengths, learn from another person’s failures, and build on prior success to gain position, strength, and worth. God takes a view from the opposite side.

“There’s nobody living right, not even one, nobody knows the score, nobody alert for God.” (Romans 3.10,11) We all struggle to know God but nobody has a clear vision. We are all failures in one way or another, which will ensure that no human scheme will elevate us to God. We are all self centered, going through each day focused on our needs, wants, and dream; often oblivious of our opportunities to be God’s hands, eyes, ears, and voice.

I do not want to climb anything! I want to fall off my ladder into God’s hands.
