There are two ways to approach any day. You can see the opportunity and potential or you can struggle with the uncertainty, doubts, and coming disasters. At some point both roads will be yours. Yet the choice you and I this morning with the dawn is never as easy as it appeared to be when it wasn’t yours or had to be made.
The simple fact is that individuals attract disaster. We don’t court problems, at least most of the time. We do find ourselves facing obstacles which are unfair, unjust, and overwhelming. Financial uncertainty, the realities of getting older, and imposed crisis all take their toll. Accidents happen. The choices of others reaches into your life and mine. Unintended outcomes of earlier decisions always come back to haunt. If one isn’t aware “every time disaster comes, you'll be in on it—disaster in the morning, disaster at night. Every report of disaster will send you cowering in terror. There will be no place where you can rest, nothing to hide under.” (Isaiah 28.19, 20) This road never seems to end.
Individuals also attract love and relationships. We long to be in community. We thirst to be in relationship. Acceptance, mercy, and a sense of belonging are good things our souls want to experience. In the midst of clouds moments of beauty can change everything. In the middle of disasters the hand of a friend can be the difference between life and death. In the uncertainty of the future walking together brings strength, courage, and a sense of mission.
God is part of your life and mine. We don’t need to worry about sending an invitation, the longing of our souls has already accomplished this step. We do need to sense how God is present in everything and in everyplace; communicating, encouraging, and reaching out. In the moment of our awareness, opportunities abound. As we catch sight of what might be, Hope lives. As we turn towards God, we will find God is already waiting on our move. We hold Hope. We have Life. God loves.
