As the band played, I caught myself watching the audience. Many knew members of the band. As the band’s energy picked up, you could feel the desire in the audience to be part of it all. As soon as one broke through the audience’s initial hesitation, everything opened up. From singing along, to swaying, and tapping in sync with the percussion, people wanted to share in what was happening. Here and there, couple started dancing with others clearing space for them to move. Solo dancers, couples, and groups all moved with the music.
As I mixed and mingled, it was fun to experience the different ways conversations morphed. For some, it was all about the music. There was a natural bond for the individuals involved. They enjoyed the gift. They felt invited to share it. Many responded in movement, voice, and applause. The impact these co-participants made was tangible – everything was bigger, more fun, and definitely more raucous.
There were others that were excited in being a part of something where they connected with the community. Knowing members of the band makes a difference in how one hears and reacts to the music. The reality of feeling and being connected impacted the way they saw and experienced the event. In addition to body language, the conversation was something that I had never experienced with them. We were and are family; tonight the words became reality. We share far more than what separates us; our celebration was inclusive and positive. Just being a part of this leaves a lasting sense of hope within me.
There were no rules, mandates, or requirements. One person’s invitation to others through action triggered a growing response. It was as if one had internalized the psalmist words, “On your feet now – applaud God!” (Psalm 100.1) Once embraced within, individuals gave the words life through applause, dance, and all kinds of expression.
I love being part of something. Co- is a good thing. In any and all its forms, you and I have an opportunity to be part of a bigger story.
