Comfort
It was 2 p.m. on a hot dusty afternoon. By the sounds coming from my stomach, I realised that I had not yet had anything to eat today. It was not intentional, just a reflection that busyness at times dominates one’s ability to find something to eat.
As I went to my mobile app to find what was nearby, it seemed that I was a minute’s walk away from a small, highly-rated, Indian restaurant. It was a true hole-in-the-wall find. I entered the no-ambiance establishment that just served authentic food in generous quantities. There were no pretences or airs. Simple, direct, and enjoyable. I ordered a South Indian thali and salty fresh lime soda, wondering what would be delivered. The results took me back to my childhood and a time of wonder, endless possibilities, and joy.
I begin today taking comfort in the memory of gifts others have left with me. I find myself replaying our time together, rediscovering the truths that bind us together, and experiencing hope and belonging all over again. As I wander down different lands, I can hear life’s whispers talking to me about the past and the present.
Beauty, love, and belonging can be found in our past and in our future. As difficult, painful, and chaotic as life can be, there are moments when I have experienced a sunset with another, knowing we would always be part of each other’s lives. This remains true as I think of those I love and care about as well as when I think of Divinity. I am not alone; “Do you remember God’s answer? I still have seven thousand who haven’t quit, seven thousand who are loyal to the finish.” (Romans 11.4)
One needs to be willing to see and open to experience what life offers. I often try to block out the negative only to realise that I am losing the gifts along the way. As I let go and simply be, I find myself embraced by Divinity and challenged to share the free gifts with all I meet. Thanksgiving in action.
