I witnessed two individuals publically commit themselves to each other for life last night. At the same time, my thoughts were also with one couple on the other side of the world who were embracing are reenacting the same commitment. In both cases, the looks in their eyes echoed a statement Divinity made about David; “I’m with him for good and I’ll love him forever; I’ve set him on high – he’s riding high!” (Psalm 89.24)
I offered a prayer on each couple’s behalf, leaving them with my best thoughts and hope that the days to come would be filled with the joy we could see and feel today. I could hear Life’s whisper, reminding me of the following truths.
Life is always fragile. Relationships require care and attention. One can be assured that circumstances and unseen forces will tear at its fabric, challenging each in ways that cannot be anticipated. Each act of care is a renewed investment in the joy and happiness that was there in the beginning.
Life will not always be a celebration. It may not be a celebration, but there are always reasons to celebrate. The act of celebration is ultimately a choice we make. In pain, we can celebrate that we feel. In heart ache, we can celebrate the fact that we once knew happiness. In the deepest darkness, we can celebrate the soon coming dawn.
Life is a journey and not a destination. It is easy and natural to focus on a destination. The risk is that one easily finds themselves focused on something, anything but the present. The journey is defined by what we are doing in the moment we have. It is here relationships are nurtured and sustained.
The Bali scene was stunningly beautiful. The setting began and ended with the bride and groom. In the middle were family and friends, wonderful food, a beautiful beach and sunset. Everything seemed more intense, colorful, and richer by the commitment we witnessed. It was a time of renewing hope. My prayer is that everyone remembers the joy and wonder.
