Individuals tell a story. There are occasions where you know the story or orchestrated fiction. The characters are playing roles they imagine will bring success. On other occasions, individuals are themselves. I want to use descriptions of themselves that includes words like simply, but that masks the power of what unfolds with natural truth.
Life reminds me that a compelling story emerges when one is naturally him/herself. The stories that I see around me are never perfect. I find that perfection is usually an artificial persona. One can sense that it is not real. On the other hand, in the imperfections that haunt us all, there is a compelling story with our unique contributions. Everyone has a few.
As I listen to an old story and I see myself making the same request.
“Agrippa said, ‘I’d like to see this man and hear his story.’
‘Good,’ said Festus. ‘We’ll bring him in first thing in the morning and you’ll hear it for yourself.’” (Acts 25.22)
As I ask and listen, the stories that emerged left me asking more questions. In hearing, I find myself richer for the experience. His/her insights open my eyes to the possibility of seeing more. The steps they have taken, offer me courage. The approaches they have used speak of new possibilities.
It is a compelling story. I find myself imaging what I could be if I used the knowledge they have shared. I dream of the possibilities they have given me.
Even in my dream state, I realize that a new reality is within reach. Anything is possible in the present. I have the freedom to choose. I can use the vision of others to expand my horizon.
The challenge for me rests in the following. I need to stay present, learning from the past, planning while letting go of the future. I must be who and what I am, accepting the good and the bad.
My story will be told in how I use the freedom within me. It is a unique tale that I have the opportunity to write.
