As we enjoyed a new cafe, the conversation between the two men behind the counter, two tourists, and ourselves ran the length of life. From new places in town to politics and on through to ingredients, everything was on the table. It was a meandering conversation. Part of me wanted to fast forward to recommendations. Our conversations could be direct, to the point. Given the expertise represented and the lack of controversy, there was no need to be informed, think or analyze. However, there were two behind the counter with a different view. In their minds, details and information mattered!
Beginning with traditions, the two started and build on a story of change, growth, and innovation. It was an interesting narrative that not only led you to the present, it also filled you with an appreciation for everything that had survived as well as things that had thrived. Ingredients, methods, and processes were stables to be considered, clarified, and understood. As time progressed, I found myself caught in the process, eager for more.
Alternative ways of looking at the past and present were presented with an open voice. As I listened more than talked, I found myself considering ideas that I had wanted to ignore just a few moments earlier. Our questions challenged and clarified, explored and looked for deeper meanings. It was a wonderful discussion that left me thirsty for more.
As I reflect about the experience in the quietness of a new day, I realize that there were several dynamics at play that I want to carry with me.
Take time for the details and nuances. They matter. They also make a difference! While we likely ended up in the same destination, we were so much richer for the experience.
Savor differences. There is something wonderful in reaching across, understanding and progressing.
Let the story be complete.
In the echoes of the lessons, I am reminded that someone has followed this pattern in my life for me; “He [Divinity] forgives your sins – every one. He heals your diseases – every one.” (Psalm 103.3)
