As I reviewed the performance of my management team with a senior colleague, we fell into an exchange of views on individual styles, personality types, and cultures. Just as I thought I knew where the conversation was going, the following observation was presented. “No matter what style the individual adopts, in the context of all cultures, and even with different personality types, when all is said and done the individual on the hot seat need to know the content of the job. They need to know the facts, numbers, and the way things come together.
As the words quietly faded into stillness, the truth of this statement resonated and still does. Something happens when someone knows the details of their life. It is more than simply knowing the facts; life emerges with understanding. It is more than being able to recite the details; Life emerges with living. It is more than simply being able to talk with others using the right words; Life emerges in knowing what the words mean.
There are times when I have a first grasp on the surface, yet the details remain beyond my grasp. I can find myself using the right words while have no idea what they really mean. I can walk, talk, and behave as others expect, yet remain empty and unconnected.
When someone talks with authority, they have facts, figures, and relationships at their fingertips. Others can feel the authenticity and truth. I find myself wondering how deeply I understand this truth. The validity of this observation applies to everything in life; my job, relationships, and even how I see myself in the darkness of the night. I know it is possible to live fully and completely. One writer noted that “the apostles gave powerful witness to the resurrection of the Master Jesus, and grace was on all of them.” (Acts 4.33) He was telling the story of individuals with truth filled content in their lives. What was true then can be true in the moment at hand.
Today is an opportunity to let Divinity fill my life.
