Today is a day for listening, hearing, and answering. While I have points that I want to make, I need to do it in the context of listening and hearing others. For the day, I have conceded the lead role in the conversation to someone else.
There is a time to listen, to make sure one has heard and understands. Respect suggests that we have a mutual role in this. While it is not always easy, I find that respect is a catalyst that when consistently demonstrated through actions builds community, gives birth to collaboration from differing viewpoints, and nurtures teamwork.
I have come to appreciate the spiritual model that mirrors the link between respect, consistency, and action. One writer observed how “we each used to independently call our own shots, but then we entered into a large and integrated life in which he has the final say in everything. This is what we proclaimed in word and action when we were baptized.” (1 Corinthians 12.12c)
The context of the present is never about letting go of one’s control. It is about embracing an idea that is a link to a greater story. Life reminds me that one’s actions tell the story of what we hold most true in our hearts. When our actions are consistent with how we want to be treated, others feel our sincerity and intent. As we come to the moment at hand, engaged, open, and respectful, we give birth to possibilities.
I realize that I cannot mandate how others behave. Through my choices I can influence others. The models that most influence me are ones inviting me to be greater than I am, stronger than I think I can be, and better than actions suggests. Each has at least two individuals in them. At the core is a mantra that takes me back to where today begins. It is two individuals or more, listening and hearing with respect. Anything is possible. I realize in the silence around me that the process is already underway. It is a good way to begin.
