In two situations that continue to unfold, it feels as if the solution depends on me. Everyone, especially myself, realizes that it will take a collection of skills to reach our objective. There are two areas where I play. First, the objective. We understand the goal when it is stated in general terms. However, when it comes to specifics, questions and uncertainties remain. My role is to provide the details that will eliminate them. Second, the map to the destination. Specifically, what are the steps that we need to take?
I am reminded of my first and only original recipe. After working two years to come up with the right balance and type of ingredients, I had a pretty good idea what it was going to take. The challenge came when I had to share this knowledge with another. The recipe needed to anticipate the challenges and risk points and provides insights on how to avoid the ones that would block the right outcome.
I am hopeful that we will get to the right destination, although I am still not sure what the destination will be. In this process the reminders I carry with me include the following.
We are connected. As much as I do not want others to depend on me, in one way or another, they do. As strong as my desire is to be totally independent, I too am dependent on others. We play roles in giving and receiving; “All the creatures look expectantly to you to give them their meals on time.” (Psalm 104.27)
Little steps are as important as big steps. Even when one knows the destinations, the little steps are critical. There is a natural tendency to just focus on the big stuff, yet it is often from the fine print that the best things come to life.
Heading in the right direction and not always see the destination clearly are not contradictions. Dips, twists, and turns are part of the journey. Trust, perseverance, and an openness to learning are important friends to have with you along the way.
