In moments of desperation we do things that we would not normally do, this is a fact! No matter how strong we think we are there are times when life overwhelms and we react as if we are truly powerless. In spite of the facts that litter our personal histories, stories of old that tell how we stood up to adversity, rumor, and accusations, sometimes we lose the plot of our life and curl up like a newborn. Because of the cracks, weaknesses, and various ribbons of our characters we find our self vulnerable to the tides and eddies that relentless push against us for no other reason than we are on a journey through life itself.
In moments of desperation, where do you turn?
A healthy man, engaged and involved in leading a country spends an evening being examined for a heart irregularity. I wonder where he turned. An upstanding citizen is caught in a moment of weakness that echoes through the local newspapers and across the gossip line of those who thought they knew him well. I wonder where he or she turned. Lives are lost, some hang in the balance, while others are permanently altered because of one careless, na?ve, and probably innocent moment. I wonder where each of the players in this life drama turns.
It would be a very different life if the steps to recover, rehabilitation, and rejuvenation were laid out in a step by step process, yet I rarely find anyone who acts as if they have found or experienced this process. Perhaps we are doomed to live through turmoil, strife, and haze without relief.
I do not have all the answers but this I do know. There is a source of hope available to all. It is in that hope that life itself takes on vibrant colors and freedom. It starts simply with a cry, a moment and call of desperation.
“God! I pray, I cry out to you! The fields are burning up, the country is a dust bowl, forest and prairie fires rage unchecked.” (Joel 1.19)
