Let me made a radical statement to start. Life isn’t about destinations or even having confidence about getting to the end. Life is about process, motivation, and about doing what is right in spite or maybe even because of what isn’t going to be the result!
Far too often I find myself weighing the odds of success. If I do this and certain things happen, what is the probability of the result I believe is the right one happening? Variations on this theme occur while I measure and waffle on the course of action that I should pursue. In the midst of this analysis and reflection the “right” path is waiting to be seized. Time passes, opportunities are missed, and hope hangs in a balance. I know if my heart what should be done but the immediacy of the “fires” around me, the longing, almost lust for the destination in front of me, combines in a moment of paralysis.
God can read your heart and mine. He has a reasonable to extremely good idea of the probability of our heart responding to the offer of Grace, Compassion, and Love. It would be easy for God to weigh the odds, make a call, and move on. The blunt facts are that these considerations do not even remotely come into God’s decision making process. John watched the scene unfold and records what is going to be a unsuccessful effort.
“I heard a voice speaking to the sixth Angel from the horns of the Golden Altar before God: “Let the Four Angels loose, the Angels confined at the great River Euphrates.” (Revelation 9.14)
At the heart of the failure is the window of opportunity for you and I; freedom of choice. We can choose our future. We can be agents of active compassion. We can make a difference, regardless of how the world measures success by destinations. There is hope that lies within each one of us! The hope rests with our response to God.
Destinations never drive, only result. The process of our life will set our destination.
