You and I have destinies. I have come to believe each holds an ideal destiny, even if we do not realize we have this treasure or if we do, what it is. It is a space where every fiber of our being finds itself in tune. It is a spot where one knows what it is like to be alive! No matter how hard we struggle to get to our destination, even if our arrival is totally different than we imagined, we will know when we have arrived.
Most never recognize their destiny. Even if one recognizes the first picture, will one pursue the true dream? The alternative is beyond frightening – a step into life with only unconditional faith and trust in someone, something. While the idea of knowing and pursuing is appealing, stepping out without the normal straps of security challenges each. As a result, most never step outside the box; they miss life’s great gifts.
In high school I thought I knew who had great destinies. Ironically my measures had no correlation to the children listening most intently to God. Looking back, it was “doom to the pretentious drunks of Ephraim, shabby and washed out and seedy—tipsy, sloppy-fat, beer-bellied parodies of a proud and handsome past. Watch closely: God has someone picked out, someone tough and strong to flatten them. Like a hailstorm, like a hurricane, like a flash flood, one-handed he'll throw them to the ground.” (Isaiah 28.1, 2) Yet there were those who stepped towards God, responding to the light. In the fullness of all things important they have realized their destiny.
How do you and I know? First, our bodies know before we do. Truth can be experienced, it always strengthens and nurtures. Second, destiny and community are linked, intimately. Even if we work alone, it is never for our singular benefit. Third, every aspect of “who” you are will be engaged. This extends far beyond our intellect and public faces. Destiny captures our hidden heart, secret desires, and unimagined dreams.
Today is a step into your destiny and mine.
