It is easy to like the important stuff of life, making decisions, taking charge, and getting things done. The challenging work in life comes in what many think is less essential or busy work. This includes taking care of one’s soul, setting time aside to rest when deadlines dominate one’s thoughts, and paying attention to details that will likely not be noticed or appreciated. Life has a habit of reminding me that busy work makes a difference. As I considered the serviette, I realised it was from another’s hand to my experience. Even closer to home, it is from my actions gifting my heart and soul with care and kindness. It seems like nothing, and yet it is so much more than that.
Life’s work is found in the details. It is easy to think otherwise as I look at a dusty dawn and consider the day ahead. When I review yesterday, I echo the writer, “I’ve had a good look at what God has given us to do – busywork, mostly.” (Ecclesiastes 3.10). When I get into the details, it is in the care offered to another’s hurting heart, the attention paid to one sharing from the soul, and the kindness offered with patience. Each detail could be seen as something small, even as Lwhispers reminded me that each was important.
Success in responding to my calling is measured by my words and actions. I have never found life in a Machiavellian framework. The means matter! The outcome is outside of my control. My focus and attention is on the small details of life and living, the busy work that Divinity gives me opportunities to participate in in the big and small stuff of living. I see myself as a messenger of hope. I am a carrier of compassion. I am an executor of kindness.
Attention to the details in giving and receiving builds an awareness of my Divine relationship. I am thankful I receive far more than I give. I appreciate I am accepted and embraced first. I hold an invitation to be Divine.
