In the age of political debates, there is little certainty with the facts. Candidates debates each other's details, twisting, spinning, and turning each word to their advantage. Trying to understand and draw a conclusion is tough! For many the details become so confusing that in the end they do not matter, for either candidate. In an age where it is far too easy to be overwhelmed with data, information, and misinformation, discarding the details of life is often the only way to survive.
I wonder if reporters have done us a disservice. Challenging candidates to be clear on the details would be helpful. To go beyond a simple act of accepting spin, interpretation, and suggested conclusions is, in my opinion, part of his and her job description. We have a right to understand the details of their view and proposals.
It seems that the natural assumption that details really do not matter extends well beyond political discourse. We excuse behaviors because of convenience, desires, and wants. We rationalize choices because of how easy, comfortable, or simple the outcomes appear to be. I find myself assuming that God sees life as I do; as a result, Divinity does not really care about what I do or do not do.
History suggests that God cares about the details of your life and mine. When “the angel said, 'your prayers and neighborly acts have brought you to God's attention,'” (Acts 10.5) it was all about the details! My experience echoes this observation. God cares about the details of our lives because this is at the heart of living. Memories are formed by relationships that grow or wither because of the details of our lives. Values are realized by the choices and decisions that make up life's details. Priorities are articulated through one detail at a time.
Today will be filled with details. We have an opportunity to live in the moment, focusing on the details at hand. If we live in that moment, anything is within reach. If we walk hand in hand with the Spirit, everything is possible.
