We sat over dinner last night, having a family meeting and debrief over the past 36 hours. In conversations like this, details matter. The alternative is not very attractive. I think it would be a short conversation marked by simplistic conclusions. The fine print is what gives our conversation meaning.
As we talked and explore the shared events, I found myself walking through life from other perspectives. I explored what it is like to be part of a family reunion at the airport as a child, sibling, and mother. I rediscover the challenge of facing the unknown when coming to a place that is almost familiar and yet new. I recalled the struggle of reconnecting with those close to one’s heart but not part of the recent past.
When I found myself reading how two men of wisdom after a long trip “on arrival, they got the church together and reported on their trip, telling in detail how God had used them to throw the door of faith wide open so people of all nations could come streaming in.” (Acts 14.27) I could see how sharing life’s details opens up the possibility for real conversation. The results, then and now, include the following.
Details open up the opportunity for trust. I experience the process as an invitation into listening in order to learn. It is hard to know which comes first – the details or the intent of listening. Often they seem to come hand in hand.
I also find that as I experience dialogue, I find myself with a second invitation. I am encouraged to trust and give trust to others in the conversation.
I really enjoyed dinner last night. The food was exceptional, yet our conversation made it special! I found myself wondering if I realized how far Life was extending this opportunity.
You and I walk with an invitation to chat with Divinity. There are no time limits. The conversation begins at anytime. It is as detailed as we want to make it. Details transform conversation, even the ones we have with God.
