The walk home led through a small alley and a short street. Visually it was a straight shot to the apartment building. I just needed to walk and take a short turn to the first building I came to. If I did this, I would be home. It seemed so simple.
The challenge is that I thought I knew more. I knew there was water between where I was and where I needed to be. I also imagined fences and barriers. It was never going to be as simple as I imagined. When I had arrived safe and sound at my target destination, within seconds of the straight line, I had added two turns.
With each step, I considered other choices in my life, each possibly a direct shot. Was it really this easy to care? Could trust and relationships be this simple? What prevented me from embracing unconditional acceptance and the opportunity to store my heart and soul?
Impossible goals are achieved one step at a time. There are multiple cliches and metaphors to remind us of this truth. It seems so simple and yet so difficult. When I muster the courage to let go of my fears, I realise that the moment that I have now is my step and opportunity. Others may come. The only one that matters is the one that I have now.
Fortune favours the bold. The poet Virgil gifted us with this reminder, which is a great reminder of the opportunity that is within my reach. The opportunity we have in each moment is our response to Divinity’s offer to embrace us as we are, restore us to everything we can be, and recreate hope and courage. “Let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.” (Hebrews 4.16)Actions lead to destinations. Knowing there is a step and understanding the opportunity each step represents is not the end of the process. They are doorways. To realise our dreams requires action in the moment that is now.
