As I sat in the lobby of the JW Marriott in Hong Kong, I concluded the people watching opportunities here were as good as anywhere I have been in a long while. It was a bizarre catwalk of attitudes, styles, and life commentaries mixing in a way for any and everyone’s enjoyment! Casual, semi-dressed, and formal all mixed with serious posturing. It was also easy to miss the less flamboyant, but one of the standouts was not going to be in second place, no matter what else was on display.
The man’s casual attire and attitude stood out in direct contrast to everyone and everything around him. The jeans, comfortable shoes, and relaxed, hanging loose shirt affirmed his intentional statement of confidence and peace. It was also stood in stark difference to the forty-something trophy partner – perfect blond hair, snake-skinned high heeled shoes, and couture jeans and silk top – attitude of arrogant confidence. Clearly, she was in charge! Heaven help anyone who got in her way! Her striking walk created a crisp echo in the wide open. His meek attitude reflected everyone, myself included as we watched the scene unfold.
Everything held together though I am not sure where they thought they were going. The striking sounds echoed as they blissfully, ignorantly, yet confidently walked into the luggage storage closet!
The quiet murmur of laughter emerged in the room as we all tried to look the other way. Ironically, I instantly thought of my walk with God. I am so sure at times that I am in charge. I know what I need to know. I am confident. I am walking.
The question then and now is this, where?
“So tell me what you think. Look at the evidence. Put your heads together. Make your case. Who told you, and a long time ago, what's going on here? Who made sense of things for you? Wasn't I the one? God? It had to be me. I'm the only God there is—the only God who does things right and knows how to help.” (Isaiah 45.21)
