The sign is clear, simple, and easy to read in English and Arabic. Its symbol is universally recognised. I know the intent is public safety and order. I also know that when I leave this morning, I will make a decision that conflicts with its advice. My exit is shorter and more manageable, and it extracts less wear and tear from my car when I take the short way out of the parking lot. With each decision, I can hear whispers about the larger story I am a part of.
Life and those before us have left signs along our way to instruct and guide. I do not think there are any agendas. The signs and markets offer learning opportunities for those who follow. What I take away from each is uniquely my own to use in the way I see best. What follows will be visible to others, offering a variation of the same opportunity for others who are open and willing to learn.
There are no perfect paths. Each step I take has two components. The visible piece is revealed through my words and choices. Each action tells a story that tells others of my values and priorities. My heart can be seen. My soul is on display. The hidden part is my intent. As implied as it might seem, it is unknown except to Divinity and me. With all my human weaknesses, I rarely make a perfect step and have never found the ideal path.
I have the freedom and accountability to learn, grow, and change when things are not working. I continue to enjoy learning. It is, for me, the realisation of hope and caring. When I look back, it can seem dark. In these moments, I hold onto the historical note; “If the first plan – the old covenant – had worked out, a second wouldn’t have been needed.” (Hebrews 8.7) Each step allows me to care for myself by applying life’s lessons to express compassion, kindness, and care in the moment.
Today, I will be alert and willing to change.
