Working out in a gym is humbling. I know I did not come in thinking I was in great shape however the truth as I went through a structured routine was more of an eye-opener than I wanted. Even the strongest muscle gave out quickly under the right situation. The first day was just weights; at least I had my legs left. They always come through when things are tough. Today I faced the cardiovascular circuit and again I quickly gave way with a dripping shirt and aching calves.
As I reflected in the soothing heat of the sauna, especially as the aromatherapy oil vaporized on the hot rocks and opened up every one of the body’s senses, I could see the more obvious facts. First, my body is aging and there is no way that I can deny too many miles of wear and tear. Second, if I cruise through life in ignorance my ego will not be able to anything to make the circumstances more positive. Third, everyday I have an opportunity to make a difference however the choice was, is, and will be mine.
More heat and a cold dip later the lessons were locked into every pore. The fact is that the “Fear-of-God is a school in skillful living – first you learn humility, then you experience glory.” (Proverbs 15.33)
The opportunity is here, now. True, physically we age and we will never have the opportunities that we had in our younger days, but life is bigger than our views at that age. Glory, success, and happiness all come as gifts. These gifts have their roots in things often illusive, especially to the strong, gifted, and endowed. The source is simple union with God.
In the gym I go through a routine to build up the weaknesses within. God offers to take care of our “within” using our gifts to Him. It sounds easy but bewares; your life is at stake! Our gifts to God include our everyday, going to work, eating and sleeping life. Give this and just see what happens!
