A masala dosa makes for a great breakfast. It was crisp, not oily, and with a hint of the sourness I love. As amazing as it would be, I listened to the silence with the empty seat across from me. Initially, it was an empty feeling. I heard life’s reminders that it did not need to be this way. With pictures and words, I reached out to those I wished were with me. In spirit, the invitation was open. With my mind understanding the virtual world it is often in, with words and imagination, I listened to their voices and our conversation as I enjoyed what might be.
Everyone in the community has a role to play with who is in. Life reminds me that every heart has a longing to belong. As important as the desire is, it is not enough. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers have critical roles in embracing the individuals who feel like they are outside. In our diversity, uncertainties, and fears, each embrace is a tangible action that says one is unconditionally accepted and belongs. The admonition of yesterday is relevant today; “Make sure no one gets left out of God’s generosity. Keep a sharp eye out for weeds of bitter discontent. A thistle or two gone to seed can ruin a whole garden in no time.” (Hebrews 12.15)
Every empty seat is an invitation to act. There are many ways to bring someone into your presence. Hearing someone’s voice takes me to them. A surprise message on my phone brings me to their smile and laughter. It begins with reaching out, prioritising one’s family, and supporting the community. I appreciate those who check in with me. It is a signal of care and the beginning of an embrace. The reality of our busy world is that there are empty seats in every life. In response to the gaps in the moment, I rediscover the meaning of relationships and living.
One’s burdens are more bearable as we support others we meet on the journey. Supporting and sharing allows Hope to work.
